Game Design

After reading about what is a game and what we should look in when making a game, I found three different website based on the same ideas but different information.

The first article I read gave me some game mechanics that I should considered when making a game for our assignment. Arunima talks about:
  1. Conflict; have some sort of challenges for the player to overcome. It could be a physical obstacle, combat with another player or a puzzle that has to be solved. A sense of collaborative learning can be built in with a challenge that all the player must work together to overcome.
  2. Strategy and chance; with strategy-based games they put a lot of control into the players' decisions they can make that affect game okay or their odds of achieving the goal. Also, it based on the chance the player puts and they have little control with the outcome. Games can be based on chance while coming up with a solution can involve the element of strategy.
  3. Aesthetics; have the power to pull people into the game. Visuals elements are a powerful means of engaging players and helping them immerse into the game experience.
  4. Theme and story; adds interest and create engagement within a learning game. Theme conveys with the visuals and with a brief "back story", also included in the rules. When talking about themes, there usually isn't any narrative running through the game. When creating a story, you need to considers: Characters. Plot. Tension. Resolution
    1. Rewards; things or keepsakes that players earn through game play. Giving players achievements for certain tasks is makes you want to learning and play more of the game. It will encourage learners to do their very best.

The second article was similar to the one we had to read but has more information. The article talks about:
    • What is game design
    • What game designers do
    • What they need to know
    • How much money they make
    • All the different job titles a game designer have
    • What types of people or personally make a good designer
Game design is interesting and all but it needs a lot of work. You need to have an interesting in game if you want to be a game designer, which is something I'm not interested in. Yes, I play games every now and than and it would be fun to design a game but I personally don't want to do that. Creating a game once or twice is enough for me.

The last article was similar to the first one I read but they used PacMan as a metaphor. In this article, Ellis talks about the different elements that was used in PacMan. Reading this article made me realised that these arcade games are so much different then what we have now.  Games used to be similar but still addicting, quality is basic and not too low or too high. I did realised that at the end of the day, games still work with the same game and visual elements.

    1. Hey Nhu
Forgot to say thank you for commenting on my Learning Growth Mindset blog when I commented on your introduction blog. I really liked the articles you found here and I hope they will help you in creating your game. I agree with you that you have to have an interest in games to be a game designer and while I love playing video games, its not a career I would like to pursue. Looking forward to seeing more of your blogs. :)

    2. Hi Nhu!
I really enjoyed reading this blog post. You've made great points regarding Game Design, points like different game mechanics. Hopefully you can use some of those game mechanics in your game. I 100% agree with you when you said that you have to like games to be a game designer. It would be kind of dull to go into game design if you don't have an interest in games.
Keep up the great work, looking forward to reading more of your blogs.

    3. hey Nhu!,
I really enjoyed reading your blog post for 'Game Design' today. The points that you made outlining game design were really well done. I liked how you went through different types of game mechanics. Hopefully your able to incorporate some of those game mechanics that you mentioned above into your final game. I completely agree about how you have to like games to be a game designer because if your not into games then your not passionate enough. Anyways,
      Great blog!

    Unity Free Tutorials

For now on unity tutorials will be about what I am going to add in for my game. Watching tutorials video will help me create the game I want to make.  I already have a problem with my menu page. I follow everything from the video but it says I have an error. This is one of the reasons why I don't want to become a game designer.  I don't like coding, it just confusing and I don't really get what is going on but hopefully, over time I know the basic coding. The video below, I had a problem adding in the TextMesh Pro. TextMesh Pro is just making the text clearer. Since I am having a problem with add that in I decided to leave it out. Other than that, the tutorial helped. This was another tutorial video I watched.

    Unity Tutorial 01

After watching tutorial of Unity, I am excited to use it and make a game for this module and see if I like doing this or not. It looks complicated but at the same time it doesn't, hopefully I will be able to make a game that I love and other people would enjoy it as well. I learned how to make a mountain or dips for lakes. It's not as hard as it seems, all you had to do it go and select the object "Terrian" then pick a brush and change the brush size and opacity to whatever you want. After selecting the size you wanted, to make a mountain all you had to do was click to raise and to make a dip for a lake all you had to do was shift and click to lower. It's pretty easy.  Adding in texture is more work but I say it would be really easy once you get the hang of it. The website  JV Unity  had a file for texture and all you had to do was download that file and drag it or import it into the unity project you are working on and it would be there. After you import it...

    Workshop 01

Traffic Light Exercise In this blog, I am going to talk about the traffic light and it wasn’t really something I am familiar with, I didn’t really know how it works when the traffic light is broken but I did know that the car one the right-hand side always goes first since it’s similar to how roundabout works It was new for me since I haven’t done or study the theories questions yet. I learned that when two cars don’t cross paths and is just going straight ahead then the pedestrians from south and north can go and cross the road. It also works both ways like north and south ore east and west.   Roundabout.  Source:  Wikimedia How I felt about the delivery method was helpful and I learned more when I started to talk to the person next to me. When we were working in groups was easy but difficult at the same time. I like working in group because I learned from one another. What I didn’t like about it was that some of us didn’t know how traffic ...
