Game Stories

Another week, another reading blog.

Level 8 Introduction and Readings was one of the articles I read this week. It talks briefly about the diversion to go into the whole "can games be art?" thing.

There are 4 reasons why waste our time retreading old ground.

  1. The concept of Fun and how to make games more enjoyable. Fun is not the only purpose of game design and in fact that some games can be successful in their design goals even if they are not fun in the way that games are.
  2. It is a debate that has been going on for ages. It comes up in conversation among designers from time to time.
  3. Art games that are made primarily for the purpose of artistic expression are reaching a critical mass. A lot of art games are very simple and small in scope, it is made by a single person in a short period of time.
  4. Know enough about the art history and art criticism to be dangerous.

Into the Woods: A Practical Guide to the Hero's Journey articles was about making a story to back up your game. Having a story behind the game will make it more fun.

The article gave an example if it was a mythical game where they created a story about the characters can interact with other characters. With the backstory, the characters can interact with each other and complete the game by creating a story.

What Every Game Developer Needs to Know about Story was the last article I read. This one was about how the story in the game isn't like a story for a movie. Games aren't movies and Movies aren't plays.

Making a story for the game, you should keep it simple and make sure that it works. Usually, the story goes like:
  • Have a hero.
  • There is an incident.
  • A gap opens up between the hero and the orderly life.
  • Hero has to take a risk to overcome the obstacles that come to them.
  • Reversal, something new happens or the hero learns something that they didn't know before and the world is back to normal again.

INTRODUCTION

ABOUT ME My name is Nhu Thai. I am really shy but after you know me you will probably regret knowing me. I love meme, I mean who doesn't? I am the oldest and I have 2 annoying brothers and one told me to write that he's a good singer...he thinks he's Beyonce... The best module I took from last year was probably web development because I like doing the coding but I also hate it at the same time. I understood it because I took down notes and ask the lecturer and classmates for help. When I saw that web development was one of my highest grade I was shocked and happy.  Career wise... I don’t really know exactly what I want to do. I would like to go and do something that involves media but I still don’t know if I want it for the long term yet. If I am doing it for the long term, I would like to go to graphic design or photography or website design.  Over the summer, I went to Disneyland Paris again. I only went because my little cousins wanted to go and I thought i...

Game Vision Statement

Zoobe is what the name for the puzzle and adventure game I want to design.  It is a game where you are an animal, in a shape of a box and trying to escape from the zoo without getting caught but the humans or traps. The background story for this game is that one night the animal decided that they want to get away and out of the zoo and be free. Some nights after, one of the animal's gate was left unlock and left their "home" behind them. Since all the animals wanted to be free and actually go back to the jungle. The animal that escape went to get the key for the gate, with the help of other animals trying to get the zoo keeper drop the key to all the gates. To play this game, you are the animal who's gate was left unlock and have to get the key to open the other gates for the animal. The animal can't move by itself so you have to move them yourself without getting caught by the zookeeper or traps. To free the animal you either have to move them to the box that...

Game Design

After reading about what is a game and what we should look in when making a game, I found three different website based on the same ideas but different information. 5 Game Elements That Create Effective Learning Games  by Arunima Majumdar Game Design, An Introduction  by Jill Duffy What are game-elements? (PacMan as reference)  by Ellis The first article I read gave me some game mechanics that I should considered when making a game for our assignment. Arunima talks about: Conflict ; have some sort of challenges for the player to overcome. It could be a physical obstacle, combat with another player or a puzzle that has to be solved. A sense of collaborative learning can be built in with a challenge that all the player must work together to overcome. Strategy and chance; with strategy-based games they put a lot of control into the players' decisions they can make that affect game okay or their odds of achieving the goal. Also, it based on the chance the play...
